GERI WINS SPICE WAR

By DAN WAKEFORD

GERI HALLIWELL last night
celebrated victory in the Battle
of the Spice Girls after beating
Emma Bunton to No 1 in the
charts.

The one-time Ginger Spice sold
140,000 copies of her single Lift
Me Up, 30,000 more than Baby
Spice's What I Am, after the
biggest head-to-head chart
battle for years.

Geri, 27, said: "I'm absolutely
ecstatic about getting to number
one - words can't express how
happy I feel. Now I'm looking
forward to the celebration."

Emma, 23, at No 2 with
producers Tin Tin Out on a
version of a 1989 hit by Edie
Brickell, was among the first to
congratulate her old Spicemate.

She said: "I'd like to say well
done to Geri. It's been a really
fun week and we are thrilled with
the number of people who bought
our CD."

Last night Geri whooped it up with close pals and industry
bigwigs at trendy London club home.

Stars invited to the party included new boyfriend Chris Evans,
George Michael, kids' TV stars Ant and Dec, Lulu and comic
couple Dawn French and Lenny Henry.

A music insider said yesterday: "It's been a fierce competition,
but in the end Geri won hands down."

Both Geri and Emma insisted that their chart battle - the fiercest
since Blur beat Oasis to Number One in 1995 - was not
deliberate.

Lift Me Up was ahead of Emma's single all week, but chart
analysts say that when news broke of Geri's relationship with
Virgin Radio boss Evans, it rocketed ahead.

The insider added: "They both sold more records than usual for a
chart week, but the revelation of Geri dating Chris boosted her
sales dramatically."

Evans did his bit for Geri on Saturday morning when he played
snippets of Lift Me Up 11 TIMES during his Rock 'n' Roll Football
show on Virgin.

That ensured millionairess Geri will get 11 royalty payments!

Lift Me Up is the second solo chart-topper for Geri, who quit the
Spice Girls in May 1998. In August this year her single Mi Chico
Latino hit the top spot.

It was the follow-up to solo debut Look At Me, which reached No
2 two months earlier.
